As a member of the growing Space & Mission Systems Legal Department, located in Broomfield, Colorado, the selected individual will provide responsive, superb-quality support to the Space & Mission Systems business. We are looking for the right candidate to join a dynamic team in a fast-paced and growing environment supporting the company as it operates throughout the world.

This position supports the Intellectual Property efforts at BAE Systems Space & Mission Systems Inc. and works on identifying, capturing, strategizing, and protecting the IP assets of the company. This role will report directly to the Chief Counsel.  You will collaborate with IP counsel of other U.S. based company affiliates. 

What You’ll Do:
 

  • Assist the business device strategic IP plans and courses of action for the end-to-end IP needs of the business. 
  • License to acquire and license IP for internal and customer facing transactions.
  • Work with inventors on IP capture to enhance product line portfolios.
  • Train and educate on IP topics including patents, trade secrets, copyright and trademarks.
  • Review patent application from outside counsel to ensure alignment with business objectives.
  • Draft patent applications internally.
  • Prepare office action responses, IDS, and other USPTO papers.
  • Electronic filing of patent applications and office action responses in USPTO and PCT.
  • Handle classified IP matters, to include patent applications including renewals.
  • Manage in-coming USPTO communications and docket for deadlines.
  • Assist in the reporting of subject inventions and confirmatory instruments.
  • Advise on IP topics on government contracts.
  • Negotiate supply chain terms and conditions related to IP rights.
  • Assist in IP litigation and mergers/acquisitions.
  • Review annuity/maintenance fee decisions and prune less important patents.
  • Review, search and file trademark applications.
  • Work with engineering to conduct IP review meetings to review new invention disclosures. 
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
 
On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site three or more days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.

Working Conditions:
 
  • Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor. 

  • J.D. from an ABA accredited law school and 8 or more years of related experience. 
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master’s Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Licensed to practice in the United States and eligible to be admitted to state bar as corporate counsel at primary work location.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years hands-on U.S. patent preparation and prosecution experience in law firm or in-house corporate setting.
  • Experience in counseling and training on innovation, patents, trade secrets, copyright, and trademarks.
  • Familiarity with defense field and government reporting (FAR/DFARS).
  • USPTO Patent Attorney.
  • High level of personal motivation and initiative to learn and acquire new skills, and adapt seamlessly to an ever-changing environment.
  • Customer focused, excellent communicator and ability to work with limited supervision
  • Solid organizational abilities and a solid team player.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft patent applications covering complex technologies.

A security clearance or access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position. However, the applicant must be willing and eligible for submission, depending on program requirements, after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access. 

  • BS or advanced degree in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science.
  • Familiarity with space-based systems.
  • Admitted to the Colorado Bar or ability to be granted Single-Client admission to the Colorado Bar.
  • Experience with CPI docketing system.
