Job Description

Job Title: Legal Assistant Classification: Full-Time - Non-Exempt

Department: Common Law - Medical Malpractice and Nursing Home

Horwitz, Horwitz, and Associates is a progressive family-owned law firm, located in Chicago's loop, who has represented Illinois' injured for over three generations. We are passionate about seeking justice for those who have been injured and who may have been previously denied representation. We are seeking to fill the role of Legal Assistant to join our Medical Malpractice and Nursing Home team.

About the Role:

The Legal Assistant is self-motivated, focused, and completes tasks in a thorough and efficient manner. The person in this role supports and works very closely with the Attorney in all day-to-day tasks and provides an outstanding client experience. The ideal candidate has strong time management skills and is able to effectively manage conflicting priorities, while understanding the needs of both the client and Attorney.

Duties and Responsibilities: include the following, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and maintain a complex case load as the primary support team member to the Attorney
  • Manage multiple court mandated cutoffs with a high awareness of deadlines
  • Prepare, organize, and retrieve case files
  • Act as a liaison between the client and Attorney providing an excellent client experience
  • Effectively communicate with the clients while demonstrating empathy and understanding of their case
  • Efficiently and effectively complete all assignments, tasks, and client calls
  • Electronically file motions and orders with the court
  • Docket orders
  • Schedule client visits/calls, court calls, mediations, depositions, court appearances, and pre-meetings with experts and clients
  • Prepare court instructions
  • Draft correspondence to opposing counsel
  • Negotiate outstanding medical bills and subrogation liens
  • Process and distribute all incoming and outgoing checks for clients
  • Prepare, support and act as the primary in-office support for all trial related matters
  • Recognize and communicate escalated or urgent matters to Attorney in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned by Attorney or leadership team

Success Factors /Qualifications:

  • : 1-year minimum experience in a Legal Assistant/Case Manager role
  • STRONGLY PREFERRED: 1-year minimum experience in plaintiff Personal Injury law, with a focus on medical malpractice and/or nursing home
  • Able to work both independently and contribute to a positive team environment
  • Self-motivated and goal driven
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Effective written and verbal communications skills
  • Efficient with time management and deadline conscious
  • Superior attention to detail and a high level of organization skills
  • Commitment to providing outstanding customer service both internally and externally
  • Familiarity with Medicare documentation, billing practices, and lien resolution is a strong plus
  • Experience with Medicare conditional payment letters and final demand letters is highly valued

Salary & Benefits:

  • Compensation range is $50,000 - $62,000 annually and depends on experience
