Job Description


SALARY GRADE: Flat Rated

This position is time-limited, grant funded, full-time.

Funding for this position will end on September 30, 2026.


The Office of the District Attorney, Prosecutorial District 16, seeks a qualified candidate to provide legal support services to the prosecutors in the Durham County office. The ideal candidate will have significant, direct experience working with victims of sexual assault, experience working with law enforcement/investigators with working victim crimes, and speaking Spanish is a plus but not required. This legal assistant will work directly with the SAKI (Sexual Assault Kit Initiative) ADA to manage cold case sexual assaults. This legal assistant will also be responsible with helping to maintain statistics related to this work.


Duties include but are not limited to the following: answer phones; assist the public; type correspondence; prepare legal documents; prepare files; assist victims and witnesses understand and prepare for court; gather information to assist in the prosecution of cases; and other duties as assigned.

  • $38,574 - $52,999/year
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: court system and procedures; legal terminology; and community resources to refer victims and witnesses.

Skill in: Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; accurately typing 35-40 wpm; and answering a multi-line telephone system.

Ability to: interview to elicit information from victims and witnesses to assure appropriate services; coordinate and schedule the daily operations of the victim and witness program; manage the court appearances of victims and witnesses to ensure their presence in the courtroom when needed; communicate orally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officers, officials of related agencies and the general public; and calmly handle stressful situations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from high school or high school equivalency certificate and two (2) years of legal secretarial experience.
