The Attorney Manager II has responsibility as follows:
To personally handle and supervise the handling of legal matters for the Division of Motor Vehicles.
To manage and assist other attorneys in conducting novel, complex and protracted litigation involving the areas of legal specialty within the Motor Vehicles Section, particularly relating to defense of claims brought under 42 U.S.C. § 1983 and other State and federal constitutional claims and challenges as well as litigation, involving the North Carolina Motor Vehicle laws (N.C. Gen. Stat. Chapter 20).
Much of the work of this position is giving legal advice to the Commissioner and other Division employees, as well as related DOT employees on a variety of matters including procurement and contracts and personnel actions of the Department of Transportation and the Division of Motor Vehicles.
The attorney is the supervisor of the Motor Vehicles Section and supervises one Attorney IV position, two Attorney III positions, and one Attorney II position, as well as a paralegal and an administrative support position.
Legal Advice: The attorney in this position serves as the senior legal advisor for the Division of Motor Vehicles and its Commissioner.
Litigation: The attorney in this position handles and manages with minimal supervision complex and routine litigation involving substantial claims and constitutional challenges of sweeping importance, some involving first impression to the State. The unit as a whole makes several appearances in court and other tribunals each week and travel throughout the state is required.Administrative Duties and Supervision: Coordinate and supervise work to ensure the provision of high quality and responsive legal services to the State. Appropriately assign work and monitor employee work load. Provide necessary level of review in litigation and non-litigation matters.
THE STARTING SALARY FOR A NEW HIRE TO THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO THE RECRUITMENT SALARY RANGE OF $ 116,147 to $ 138,083. The position is client funded. Salary offers are based upon the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as departmental budget and equity considerations.

- Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Licensed to practice law by the North Carolina State Bar and five years of progressively responsible professional legal experience. NOTE: GS 114-2 and 114-6 make it the duty of the Attorney General of NC to represent the State of North Carolina in all litigation unless another statute specifically states otherwise.
